In many cases, you may need a new Microsoft Office license after reinstalling Windows.
Some Office licenses are valid for one-time activation only and may not reactivate after Windows is reinstalled or the device is changed.
1. Check Your License Type
Before reinstalling Windows, check the product title and description.
Some Office licenses may be:
- One-time activation licenses
- Bind licenses linked to a Microsoft account
- Retail licenses
- LTSC licenses
- One PC or one device licenses
If the product does not mention Bind, the license may not be linked to your Microsoft account.
2. One-Time Activation Licenses
If your Office license is a one-time activation license, it may not activate again after reinstalling Windows.
In this case, you may need to purchase a new license.
This can also happen after:
- Reinstalling Windows
- Formatting the PC
- Changing the motherboard
- Moving Office to another device
- Removing the original Office installation
3. Bind Licenses
If your Office product is a Bind license, it is usually linked to your Microsoft account.
In this case, you may be able to reinstall Office and activate it again by signing in with the same Microsoft account used during the first activation.
Please make sure you use the correct Microsoft account.
4. What to Do After Reinstalling Windows
After reinstalling Windows, install the same Office version you purchased.
Then try to activate it using your original key or Microsoft account, depending on the license type.
If activation fails, the license may not support reactivation.
