If your Office 2021 installation failed, please follow the steps below before contacting support.
Most installation issues are caused by old Office versions, wrong installer files, missing configuration files, or 32-bit / 64-bit conflicts.
1. Restart Your PC
First, restart your computer.
After the restart, try running the Office 2021 installation again.
This can fix temporary Windows or installer errors.
2. Make Sure You Are Installing the Correct Product
Before installing, check that you are using the correct installer for the product you purchased.
For example:
- Office 2021 Professional Plus
- Office 2021 Home and Business
- Office 2021 LTSC
- Office 2021 Standard
The installer must match your product key.
If you install the wrong Office version, activation may fail later.
3. Uninstall Old Office Versions
Old Office installations can block the new installation.
Before installing Office 2021, remove older versions such as:
- Microsoft 365
- Office trial version
- Office 2016
- Office 2019
- Another Office 2021 version
- Project or Visio, if they conflict with the installer
To uninstall Office:
- Open Settings
- Go to Apps
- Open Installed apps
- Search for Office or Microsoft 365
- Uninstall the old version
- Restart your PC
After restarting, try installing Office 2021 again.
4. Check for 32-bit and 64-bit Conflicts
Office cannot install correctly if another Office product with a different architecture is already installed.
For example:
- You cannot install 64-bit Office while 32-bit Office is still installed
- You cannot install 32-bit Office while 64-bit Office is still installed
If you see an error about 32-bit or 64-bit Office, uninstall all existing Office apps first.
Then restart your PC and install the correct version again.
5. Make Sure All Office Apps Are Closed
Before starting the installation, close all Office apps.
Make sure these apps are not running:
- Word
- Excel
- PowerPoint
- Outlook
- OneNote
- Project
- Visio
You can also restart your PC to make sure no Office process is still running in the background.
6. Run the Installer as Administrator
Some Office installations need administrator permission.
Right-click the installer and choose:
Run as administrator
If Windows asks for permission, click Yes.
7. For Office 2021 LTSC: Do Not Double-Click setup.exe
If you are installing Office 2021 LTSC, do not simply double-click setup.exe.
Office LTSC usually requires a configuration file and must be installed through Command Prompt.
The correct command usually looks like this:
setup.exe /configure configuration.xmlIf you double-click setup.exe, you may see an error such as:
“The configuration file was not specified.”
8. Check That setup.exe and configuration.xml Are in the Same Folder
For Office 2021 LTSC, your installer folder should contain:
setup.exe
configuration.xmlBoth files must be inside the same folder.
If configuration.xml is missing, the installation command will not work.
Also make sure the file is not accidentally named:
configuration.xml.txt9. Use the Correct Folder Path
A common mistake is copying the folder path from a tutorial video.
You must use the folder path from your own computer.
Example:
cd "C:\Users\YourName\Downloads\Office 2021 LTSC"Then run:
setup.exe /configure configuration.xmlIf your folder name contains spaces, keep the quotation marks.
10. Check If You Are in the Correct Folder
After using the cd command, type:
dirThen press Enter.
You should see:
setup.exe
configuration.xmlIf you do not see these files, you are in the wrong folder.
Copy the correct folder path from File Explorer and try again.
11. Check Your Internet Connection
Some Office installations need an internet connection to download or verify files.
Before installing, make sure:
- Your internet connection is stable
- VPN is turned off
- Proxy is turned off
- Firewall or antivirus is not blocking the installer
If the download stops or fails, restart your PC and try again with a stable connection.
12. Check Available Disk Space
Office may fail to install if your device does not have enough free storage.
Before installing, make sure you have enough free space on your system drive.
Usually, this is the C: drive.
13. Update Windows
If the installation still fails, check for Windows updates.
Go to:
Settings > Windows Update
Install any available updates, restart your PC, and try installing Office again.
14. If Installation Still Fails
If Office still does not install, try this:
- Uninstall all Office versions
- Restart your PC
- Delete old installer folders if needed
- Download or use the correct Office 2021 installer again
- Run the installation as administrator
- Follow the activation guide included with your order
15. Activate Office After Installation

Then go to:
File > Account
If Office asks for activation, select:
Change Product Key
