If Office asks you to register, sign in, or activate after installation, it usually means Office is not activated yet or the wrong Office version is installed.
Please follow the steps below.
1. Open an Office App
Open one Office app, such as:
- Word
- Excel
- PowerPoint
Then go to:
File > Account
This page will show your Office product information and activation status.
2. Check If Office Is Activated
On the Account page, check if Office says:
- Product Activated
- Activation Required
- Sign in required
- Unlicensed Product
If Office is not activated, continue with the next step.
3. Enter Your Product Key
On the same Account page, look for:
Change Product Key
Click it and enter your 25-character Office key.
The key format looks like this:
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
After entering the key, close all Office apps and open Word or Excel again.
4. Remove Old Office or Microsoft 365 Trial Versions
If Office still asks you to register, your PC may have another Office version already installed.
This often happens on new laptops that come with a Microsoft 365 trial.
Please check:
Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features
Look for old or extra Office versions, such as:
- Microsoft 365
- Office Trial
- Office Home and Business
- Another Office version
If you see another Office version that is not the one you purchased, uninstall it.
Then restart your PC and open Office again.
5. Reinstall Office If Needed
If the registration message still appears, uninstall Office completely and reinstall the correct version using the installation guide from your order email.
Make sure you install the same Office product that you purchased.
For example:
- Office 2021 key should be used with Office 2021
- Office 2024 key should be used with Office 2024
- Office LTSC key should be used with the correct LTSC version
