There are different types of Windows keys. Each one works differently, so it is important to understand what type of license you purchased.
1. Retail Windows Key
A Retail key is usually intended for individual users.
This type of key is used to activate Windows on one device at a time.
In many cases, a Retail license can be moved to another device, as long as it is no longer used on the previous device.
Main points:
- Used by individual customers
- Activates one device at a time
- Can often be transferred to another PC
- Must match the correct Windows edition, such as Home or Pro
2. OEM Windows Key
An OEM key is usually linked to the first device where it is activated.
This type of license is commonly used by PC manufacturers or prebuilt computers.
Once activated, an OEM key is normally tied to that device, especially to the motherboard.
Main points:
- Usually linked to one specific PC
- Not normally transferable to another device
- Often used on prebuilt computers or laptops
- Must match the correct Windows edition
3. Volume Windows Key
A Volume key is usually made for companies, schools, or organizations that need to activate many devices.
These keys are not normally intended for regular personal use.
Volume licenses may require special activation systems or business-level management.
Main points:
- Made for organizations or businesses
- Can be used for multiple devices depending on the license
- May require special activation conditions
- Not the same as a normal Retail or OEM key
4. Generic Windows Key
A Generic key is a public Microsoft key used mainly for installation, testing, or switching Windows editions.
Generic keys are not meant to permanently activate Windows.
If your key is detected as generic or public, it may not be a valid activation key.
Main points:
- Publicly available
- Used for installation or edition switching
- Does not permanently activate Windows
- Should not be sold as a normal Windows license
5. Why This Matters
Your Windows key must match your installed Windows edition.
For example:
- A Windows 11 Pro key works only with Windows 11 Pro
- A Windows Home key works only with Windows Home
- A Generic key cannot be used as a real activation license
